What? 5 Unhealthy Healthy Foods! How can food be unhealthy and health at the same time?  They cannot at least not on most cases. I am not talking about eating too much of a good nutritious food or taking too many vitamins (that is a subject for another blog article).  So what am I talking about then. Well I am referring to foods that at first glance are healthy until you take a second look at the label and carefully read the list of ingredients.  Here are 5 foods that you need to be a bit selective about before you consume them.

5 Unhealthy Healthy Foods-Item #1 Yogurt

Yogurt in general is good for you unless you buy the flavored variety. The "Key Lime Pie" or "French Silk Pie" flavors may taste great but they are full of sugar or high-fructose syrup. Not what what you need. How do you get around this? Well you could stop eating yogurt or you can buy the plain yogurt and dress it up yourself.  Just mix in some of your favorite fruit like blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries and presto, you have a healthy snack that tastes great!

Bread is made with flour (dah...) and flour is often overly processed.  Look for bread that is made with "Whole Grain" or "whole wheat" flour.  Make sure you see "whole" on the label. Not just wheat flour, that can still be made from processed flour.  The wheat germ and bran in wheat is good for you unfortunately all the processing that is done to wheat to make it flour removes most of the good stuff.

Ok, dark meat has more fat in it than the white meat so next time you are shopping for chicken get the breast.  Make sure you take the skin off too, that is mostly fat, you could follow up a good choice with a bad one.  Oh, and be careful how you prepare it, fried chicken with that delicious crispy coating on it may taste great but adds a lot of stuff that you don't need to you diet. Baked, or my favorite--Grilled is best. It is also a good excuse to have a picnic (if you have an outdoor grill) in the summer time. Done right chicken doesn't have to be one of the "5 unhealthy healthy foods."

Yum yum, love canned peaches! I can do without the sugar though and so can you.  Your money is better spent on fresh fruit. Wash it thoroughly before you eat it though. Don't be afraid to eat the pealing, there is a lot of good stuff in there too. Not saying that you have to go for the "Organically" grown variety but that is a choice that you can make. You will pay more for it though. Personally, I just make sure a wash the fruit.  If you want to you could also can some up yourself if you are handy with that sort of thing. That way you know what is in it.  I love going to the local farmers market or apple farm to get some fresh fruit. The applies I run through my apple pealer/corer/slicer and put them in a freezer bag and into the freezer to eat later.

Ok, this is almost a no win here.  Many Juices have extra sugar added and all of the pulp drained from them.  Look for "Fresh Squeezed" and no sugar added.  You definitely will pay more for the juice but it will be worth it from a nutritional aspect. Also look for 100% preservative free juices. No matter what you do thought, fresh fruit will still be the better choice.
